Two short readings for teen ESL learners: American public libraries and Ellis Island.
Topic: places students can use in America
In America, many towns and cities have public libraries. A public library is a place where people can read, study, use computers, and borrow books. You do not need to buy the books. You can take them home and return them later.
Many students go to the library after school. They can do homework, read quietly, or use free Wi-Fi. Some libraries also have English classes, story time for children, and activities for teenagers.
To borrow books, you usually need a library card. A library card is often free. You may need your name, address, phone number, or an ID. If you are new in America, the library can be a very helpful place.
A library is not only for books. It is also a safe, quiet, and friendly place. You can ask a librarian for help. You can say, “I need to find a book,” or “Can you help me use the computer?”
Topic: immigration and a new life in America
Many years ago, millions of immigrants came to the United States. An immigrant is a person who moves from one country to another country. Many people came because they wanted work, safety, freedom, and a better life for their families.
From 1892 to 1954, many immigrants arrived at Ellis Island in New York Harbor. They came by ship. When they arrived, workers checked their names, papers, and health. Some people were nervous because they did not speak English well.
For many families, Ellis Island was the first door to America. After they passed the checks, they could enter the country. Some people went to New York City. Others took trains to different states to work and live.
Today, Ellis Island is a museum. People visit it to learn about immigration history. Many Americans have family stories connected to Ellis Island. It reminds people that America has been shaped by many families from many countries.
